Podcasts are still free – mostly

Back in the day – you know, a couple of years ago – when podcasting was the big media revolution, we sought ways to make money with our various shows. Subscription models were my favorite, particularly those with low cost subscriptions for ongoing monthly or weekly charging. Some came and went, few really cracked the code of making money. But now, it’s not the subscription shows that are financially successful, but the free podcasts. More and more I’m hearing of producers earning enough to make their efforts worthwhile, or even enough that they can give up the day job altogether. That’s an interesting prospect, giving up the full time job to concentrate on just doing a podcast. Sounds like a dream come true, so time I got the thinking cap on and dusted off the microphone.
