PYMES is a Spanish acronym that stands for Pequena y mediana empresa. In English, the acronym connotes small and medium enterprises whose headcount drops below the standard limit. They use computers to manage their business. It is commonly used in Latin American countries as well as Spanish territories to signify companies that do not employ the desired number of employees.
The standard number of employees varies from counties to countries. In Costa Rica, companies that can be categorized under PYMES should employ 30 people. In Guatemala, he standard limit should rage between 5-50 employees. In Peru, the number of employees categorized as PYMES range from 1-100. In Mexico, it is reported that there are at least 11-50 companies that can be under PYMES category.
Small or medium enterprises are also common in European countries. Similar to companies in Spanish speaking region, there are a variety of standard numbers of employees in many European countries. Most European companies whose number of employees reaches 10 only are called micro or small enterprises while those which goes above the said number is said to be medium.
