Dementia Is a Leading Cause of Memory Loss
One of the scariest things about getting old is the prospect of losing our mental edge. Worse yet is the possiblity of contracting full-blown senility, also known as dementia.
Dementia is the medical term for a loss of mental acuity associated with aging or brain injury. One common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease, characterizd by the formation of plaque on the neurons of the brain.
While not the most painful condition you could contract, dementia is frightening because it eats away at our very selves. In severe cases, the person might no longer know the date, month, or even year; they may not know where they are or even who they are. People they’ve known for decades, including close relatives, appear as strangers.
Dementia is currently non-treatable, although some research suggests that keeping your mind active throughout life is one way to fight off mental decline. Hopefully breakthroughs in coming years will uncover definitive treatments for this disease.
