History Tidbits of Modern Design

The first designs of modern furniture come from a time period that may surprise you.  One would guess that most modern designs began in the early fifties here in America, but that’s really not true.  Surprisingly enough, modern furniture designs began to emerge during the late nineteenth century.  These designs were influenced by modernism and became popular for their simplicity and unique use of various materials other than wood.  As industry developed so did modern furniture and art producing items made of metal, molded plywood and plastic.  The clean lines and geometric shapes were appealing and gave a hint of sophistication that were previously associated with pieces of ornament that took great amounts of time to craft.  As practicality became more important, modern design became more popular and focus on the future fueled the popularity becoming what we now know as modern design.
